Established in 1994, Bakcell was the first company to provide a cellular communications service in Azerbaijan.
The company currently has 26% market share, with approximately 1,400,000 customers. Since 2006, revenue has grown year on year by more than 50%, reaching over 210 million US dollars in 2008.
Originally an Analogue (ETACS) System Operator, in 1998 Bakcell implemented state-of-the-art GSM telecommunication technology. Bakcell now provides a range of post and prepaid personal communication services in compliance with international standards and has tailored its service offerings to make mobile communication services affordable and convenient for consumers and corporate customers.
In 2008, Bakcell covered 80% of the population in Azerbaijan (around 8.5 million), 61% of whom use a cellular communications services. With significant investment in 2008 and 2009, to provide customers with the best network experience, Bakcell now covers 90% of the population and 82% of the land area of the country.
The whole network has been upgraded to EDGE technology to provide high speed internet. Network investment will continue to deliver increasing coverage, provide even better customer support and the very latest new mobile data services.
Bakcell customers can use the Roaming Service in Europe, Asia, North and South America, Australia and Africa. Bakcell has roaming agreements with 242 operators in 149 countries globally.
On 8 February 2009, during the 5th ceremony of Caspian Energy Integration Award, Bakcell was awarded ‘Telecommunication Company of the Year’. Bakcell was selected as the winner following a survey among 30,000 senior and mid- level managers from 30 countries across the world.
